I am member of the Piano Technicians Guild, Chapter 101 of New York, NY.
I hold a certificate from the New York School of Piano Tuning, Service, and Repair, the premier piano technician’s school in New York. NYSOPT was founded and is run by Lou Tasciotti, the head piano technician at the Mannes School of Music, the conservatory at the New School.
My account with Schaff Piano Supply Co. ensures that I have access to every product I need to service your piano. As the largest wholesaler of piano parts and tools in North America, Schaff Piano Supply requires that their customers are registered as professional piano technicians or music merchants.
The piano is unlike a lot of our twenty-first century entertainment. It is a physical thing that takes up space. Because it is a constant presence in your home, your practice room, your recording studio, a performance hall, or a house of worship, your piano wants to be played.
When I was sixteen, I went to the Steinway showroom in Dallas, Texas. After I sampled several pianos on the floor, a salesperson saw that I was a fairly serious player. He invited my parents and me to a back room where they held Van Cliburn’s favorite piano when he was in the area. Playing that piano was a dream. As soon as I thought the music, the piano sounded it, as if there were no intermediary between my mind, arms, hands, fingers, keys, action, and strings. The instrument was in impeccable condition, and I wanted to keep playing all afternoon.
Very few have the luxury of a nine-foot concert grand in their home, but your piano should be a joy to play. It should invite you to play. And, your playing should inspire you to play more.
I am a piano tuner and technician by trade. I’m a musician by upbringing.
At the age of eight, I began studying classical piano and was trained in music theory. Later, I had an internship with an acoustical firm in Dallas, Texas. Both of which were good foundations for the physics of piano tuning. I was fortunate to receive a rebuilt 1925 Steinway Model M for my sixteenth birthday, a present that was a no-brainer choice over a car! For over twenty years, that Steinway baby grand has been my personal piano.
I first became interested in piano tuning after completing my undergraduate degree in Ohio, at the College of Wooster, where I attended with a scholarship for piano performance. I was teaching piano, and bought a cheap piano tuner’s starter kit. More recently, the idea of a full-time career as a piano technician led to my current situation. I currently reside in Harlem with my wife, two children, and two dogs. I’m interested in music production, and I play jazz guitar for the 1920s and ’30s era three-part female vocal jazz group The All’s Well Sisters.
